First-Time Registration Renewal? Here's What You Need to Know!

As a first-year graduate nurse, you're approaching an important milestone: renewing your nursing registration for the first time. The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra) has introduced a new online portal to streamline this process. Here's how to navigate your renewal:

What's New?

  • New Ahpra Portal: Ahpra has launched a new portal for health practitioners to manage their registration. This portal is separate from the NMBA but is used for renewing your nursing registration.
  • Enhanced Security: The portal now requires multifactor authentication (MFA) to protect your personal information. This means you'll need to use both your password and a code from an authenticator app each time you log in.

Steps to Prepare

  1. Set Up Your Ahpra Portal Account:
    • Visit the Ahpra portal login page.
    • Click on 'Log in to Ahpra portal'.
    • If you already have an account, you'll need to move it to the new portal.
    • If you're setting up for the first time, click 'Create account' and follow the prompts.
  2. Prepare the Following:
    • Your Ahpra username and password. If you're unsure, refer to your previous registration emails or contact Ahpra support.
    • A laptop or desktop computer (the portal is optimized for larger screens).
    • An iOS or Android mobile phone to download the Google Authenticator app.
    • Your mobile phone will be needed each time you log in due to MFA requirements.
  3. Set Up Multifactor Authentication (MFA):
    • Download the Google Authenticator app from the App Store or Google Play Store.
    • After logging into the Ahpra portal, you'll be prompted to scan a QR code with the app.
    • This will link your account to the app, generating a one-time code for each login.
    • For detailed instructions, refer to Ahpra's MFA setup guide.
  4. Await Your Renewal Invitation:
    • Once your portal is set up, Ahpra will send you an invitation to renew your registration.
    • Keep an eye on your email for this notification.

Ahpra has a comprehensive Portal Help Centre with guides and FAQs to assist you with setting up your account and MFA. If you encounter issues, it's recommended to consult these resources before reaching out directly, as Ahpra is currently experiencing high call volumes.
