What you'll learn:

1

Enhanced evidence-based knowledge of the pathophysiology of gestational diabetes.

2

Identify patients at high risk of developing gestational diabetes mellitus.

3

Able to initiate appropriate assessment, education, treatment and referral for a person with gestational diabetes mellitus.

Who it's for:

This Ausmed Course is most relevant to registered midwives, nurses and other health professionals currently or intending to work with pregnant women with or at risk of developing gestational diabetes mellitus.

Why it's needed:

According to the National Hospital Morbidity Database, in 2017–18, around 1 in 6 females, aged 15–49 who gave birth in hospital, were diagnosed with gestational diabetes (16.1% or 43,100 women) (AIHW 2021). Due to this high prevalence of diabetes in Australia, health professionals are likely to encounter this condition and require the knowledge to appropriately educate, care for and identify at-risk women. Through appropriate evidence-guided actions, nurses and other health professionals can reduce maternal and foetal risks associated with gestational diabetes mellitus.

Purpose:

To provide healthcare professionals with current, evidence-based information concerning gestational diabetes mellitus, in order to reduce both maternal and foetal risks.
