Understand the care experience from the viewpoint of the person living with dementia.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, staff should be able to:

  • Describe the basic functions of different parts of the brain.
  • Identify how dementia-related damage to the brain may impact on the person and their responses.
  • Describe person-centred care (PCC).
  • Recognise that applying the principles of PCC can improve the quality of care for people with dementia.
  • Recognise a number of models and frameworks that can provide structure to assessing and planning person-centred care for people with dementia.
  • Apply simple strategies that support a person-centred approach.
  • Outline the impact of dementia on communication.
  • Identify and implement communication strategies that support communicating well.
  • Reflect on your communication style and rehearse changes you can make to enhance understanding for the person with dementia.
